EL BUSTO DE JIM EN PÈRE LACHAISE / JIM'S BUST AT PÈRE LACHAISE

El famoso busto de Jim Morrison que adornara su tumba en el cementerio de Pêre Lachaise es seguramente una de las piezas más ambicionadas por cualquier fan/freakie/coleccionista de THE DOORS. Obra del escultor croata Mladen Mikulin, la escultura fue realizada para conmemorar los 10 años de la muerte de Jim Morrison, en 1981. Anteriormente había una lápida con su nombre pero fue robada en 1973. Poco tiempo duró, y el codiciado busto tampoco corrió mejor suerte. En 1988 y después de haber sido cubierto con numerosos graffiti (o mejor diremos que estaba sucio de rallajos), obra de los muchos vándalos que peregrinan incesantemente hasta la que probablemente sea junto con la de Elvis la tumba más visitada de un rocker en todo el mundo, fue robada no se sabe cómo ni por quién. (¿Podría ser que algún guarda del propio cementerio viera el filón y se la agenciara para venderla en el mercado negro? En este mundo nuestro me lo creo todo y más.)

Ya en los 90, los padres de Jim visitaron la tumba de su hijo, y gracias a ellos se colocó de nuevo una lápida donde se lee inscrito en griego "ΚΑΤΑ ΤΟΝ ΔΑΙΜΟΝΑ ΕΑΥΤΟΥ" o lo que es lo mismo: "De acuerdo con su propio destino". Se sabe también que Mikulin realizó más tarde dos esculturas más en bronce, y por lo que se lee en la red, está a la espera de obtener licencia para poder colocar alguna de ellas en la tumba donde descansan los restos del atormentado poeta y rocker....

Me pregunto si con tanto bombo y platillo como se le está dando al aniversario de la muerte de Jim (incluso perdonándole oficialmente por su indecente actuación en el concierto de Miami), no veremos muy pronto anunciada también la colocación de esta nueva escultura en su tumba. A saber, tal vez algún político se decide a conceder la licencia que se necesita ante próximas elecciones. ¿Podría ser, no? ¿Qué opináis vosotros? Y aparte de esto, tenéis más información sobre Mladen Mikulin? He intentado localizar su website oficial en la red, pero no he encontrado nada....Algunas referencias a su obra, pero poca cosa. Ni siquiera aparece en Wikipedia. Se le nombra en la biografía de Jim, pero no existe enlace alguno a la suya propia :(

Os dejo con unos videos: En el primero vemos al escultor entrevistado por el crítico de Rock e historiador de arte Darko Glavan (que por cierto ha muerto ya el pobre). La pena es que hablan en croata y no tiene subtítulos, pero tal vez os parezca interesante de todos modos. El segundo video es una filmación de una fan de la tumba de Jim cuando todavía presentaba el busto, en el 10º aniversario de su muerte y con presencia de Ray, John y Robby (atentos a los fans con el garrafón y el tetra brik de vino barato, y la barra de pan que "rula" jajaja.







De todos modos es una pena ver el estado en el que se encontraba la tumba y su efigie tras varios años de gamberradas y niñatos visitando la tumba, lugar de culto y también de incultos, porque hay que ver cómo de poco cuidan algunos algo que se supone debería ser más respetado....

Entendemos vuestra pasión chicos/as pero sabed que aunque no ensuciárais el sitio hasta dejarlo como un auténtico cagadero junkie, vuestra dedicación y amor seguirían siendo apreciados igual o todavía más :( Espero que si una nueva escultura vuelve a ocupar la tumba, todos la respetemos por su significado. ¿O quizás Jim preferiría los graffitis?

The famous bust of Jim Morrison at his Pêre Lachaise's grave in Paris is maybe one of the most coveted items in Rock history. Any fan/freak/collector of THE DOORS must be wondering where this beautiful and adored piece is located right now. Created by the Croatian sculptor Mladen Mikulin, it was realized to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Jim's death, in 1981. Before there was a gravestone with his name which was stolen in 1973. It didn't last long and the ambitioned bust didn't have a better luck. In 1988 and after having been covered with numerous graffiti (or should we say just that it was simply dirty by hundreds of markers), made by the many vandals who constantly go on a pilgrimage to the grave which is probably together with Elvis' the most visited grave of a rocker in the world, the sculpture was stolen, nobody knows how that exactly happened and who did it. (Could it be possible that one of the keepers of the cemetery got hold of the sculpture, realizing of the gold mine the piece supposed to sell it in the black market? In the world we are living I can believe that and more.)

Already in the 90s, Jim's parents visited their son's grave and thanks to them a new gravestone with the Greek inscription "ΚΑΤΑ ΤΟΝ ΔΑΙΜΟΝΑ ΕΑΥΤΟΥ" was set at the place. The phrase literally means "According to his own destiny". It's also known that Mikulin later made other two sculptures this time in bronze, and for what it's read on the net he's now waiting to get a license to be able to place one of them on the grave where the remains of the tormented poet and rocker rest...

I wonder if now with all the great fanfare surrounding the 40th anniversay of Jim (he has been even pardoned for his indecent act at Miami's concert), we won't see very soon on the news something about the placing of the new sculpture on his grave. Who knows, it's possible that some politician came up with approving the license before next elections. That could happen, don't you think? What's your opinion about it? And apart from this, does someone have more information about Mladen Mikulin? I've tried to find his official website with no success...Some references to his work but nothing really remmarkable. He doesn't even appear on Wikipedia except for being mentioned on Jim's biography. No links to his own. :(

It's a pitty that they speak Croatian and there are no subtitles but maybe you find the video interesting anyways. The second video was shoot by a fan and shows us Jim's grave with its immaculate effigy on the 10th anniversary of his death and with the priceless presence of Ray, John and Robby at the place. Don't miss the drunken fans with the demijohn and the tetra brik containing for sure cheap wine, and the baguette circulating from one hand to the other, that looks funny and really familiar, hell, a real feast of friends LOL.







In any case I want to say that it's just a pitty to see the state the grave and the statue were found in after several years, a place of cult but also a meeting point for many people uneducated, for Jim' sake! you just have to see how careless some people are with something which is supposed to be highly respected...

We totally understand your passion guys but you should know that without messing the place up (until making it look like a junkie toilet) your love and devotion would still be appreciated, maybe even more. I just hope that if a new sculpture it's placed on the grave everybody respects its meaning...Or perhaps Jim would prefer the graffiti?
